Catching Fire: Interview with Suzanna Collins

Questions for Suzanne Collins

Question 1: In the Hunger Games where there barely is any food, why does Katniss blow up all the food?

Answer 1: Katniss has the ability to hunt and gather food for herself. But the Careers, who had gathered all the food together, do not have that sort of ability. By Katniss doing this, this gives the Careers a sense of starvation. This was a very smart move by Katniss, as it apparently worked for her. Considering she won the games.

Question 2: Why was the Hunger Games created?

Answer 2: The Hunger Games was created by the Capitol. It was created as a punishment for the people of Panem because people were trying to rebel against the powerful capitol. It has been on for 75 years in the book “Catching Fire”.

Question 3: If there is only 12 districts, what is district 13?

Answer 3: District 13 used to be a running district. Before the first annual Hunger Games, the district was reportedly bombed and destroyed. This lead to apparent evacuation of the district. Later in the books, there is suspected evidence that there still is life in district 13, and in the last book they find out that district 13 had actually turned into an underground district, with actual life still there.

Question 4: What was the untold details of district 12?

Answer 4: After Katniss, Peeta, and all the other tributes break through the force field, the Capitol was very unhappy. They cut all the power in district 12, and set out bomb squads. After about 15 minutes, the town was completely gone, leaving about 10% of people alive.

Question 5: Why did the Careers let Peeta join them, knowing he knew Katniss?

Answer 5: The Careers were always jealous of Katniss. After her amazing scoring at the training, they were quite scared of her. They believe that Peeta had left Katniss to stay alive, and thought he would have valuable information about her.

Lover Boy
Peeta Mellark, also known as “Lover boy”. Arguably the most likeable person in the entire series of the Hunger Games. Always known as the loner, the good guy. When it comes to Peeta Mellark from the series “The Hunger Games” and the book “Catching Fire”, he is self-sacrificing, heroic, and loyal. Peeta always puts everyone else before himself, and that’s what makes him all 3 of these.
To start, Peeta is self-sacrificing. At a time where District 12, the district where Peeta is from, just like Katniss, is very poor, no one has any food. Katniss and her family have no food left. Katniss is slowly starving to death. Peeta’s father is a baker, and him and Peeta bake bread. Peeta realizes how hungry Katniss is, and wants to help. He deliberately overcooks the bread, and his mother tells him to give it to the pigs. Instead, Peeta runs out to Katniss, and gives her bread enough for her and her family. In a district that is very poor, this is a huge deal to Peeta’s family. He gets into trouble with his family, and says “My mother hitting me. I was taking out bread for the pigs and instead gave it to you.”
Furthermore, Peeta is heroic. During the Hunger Games, Peeta did not want to kill anyone. He did not want to do what everyone else was. The Careers were coming after Katniss and Peeta. Since Peeta did not want to kill, he tricked them and pretended to join their side, and led them away from where he knew Katniss was. After Cato, a career, finds out about what was happening, he went after Peeta. He severely wounded him, and Peeta got Katniss out alive. When Katniss was treating Peeta wounds with medicine, he says “So, if you can quit acting like I’m wounded, I can stop acting like it.” This was to get Katniss more focused on the game and not to worry about Peeta’s wound.
In addition, Peeta is loyal. For starters, he is in love with Katniss. But this did not start recently for him. Peeta has crushed on Katniss since the age of 5. Also, Peeta faked a team up with the Careers in order to protect Katniss, and did not leave Katniss for the Careers. Peeta follows whatever Katniss says. The biggest time he followed what she said was when they were going to commit a double suicide, and they had bother agreed that they would eat the poison berries. But before the berries, Peeta was ready for Katniss to kill him. I wanted Katniss to win the game, and told her to kill him. He says” We both know they have to have a victor. It can only be one of us. Please, take it. For me.”
To conclude, Peeta is probably the most likeable person in the series because he is so self-sacrificing, heroic, and loyal. These traits make him so appealing to viewers, Katniss, and those who watched him during the games. He did not have the physical skill to win the Hunger Games, but his strong mentality is what got him through.

The Girl On Fire
Katniss Everdeen, the winner of the 74th annual Hunger Games. When it comes to Suzanne Collins book “Catching Fire”, Katniss Everdeen is the best. Katniss is the main character of Catching Fire, and the series “The Hunger Games”. Katniss is the best because she is brave, and takes the risk of her life. She is responsible, and puts more than family before herself. She is very intelligent, and can do whatever she wants.
To start, Katniss is brave. One of the biggest times she shows her bravery is when her sister, Prim, is called to join the Hunger Games. Her sister is very small, and no one would step up for her. Katniss is famous for stepping up for her sister, and saying the very well-known words “I volunteer as tribute”. This results in her sister not having to go to the hunger games, and Katniss showing even more bravery during the games. Katniss took on everyone in the Hunger Games, and won it herself. She showed true bravery to step in, and determination to come out alive, unlike the other 22 people.
Furthermore, Katniss is responsible. Katniss takes on a very tough challenge to take care of her family after the death of her father in an explosion incident. But she also takes on a huge task with it, to take care of a village suffering from a loss of food in the city. She goes out herself and finds as much food as she can for the town, and illegally hunts to feed her starving family.
She is also the leader of a revolution to take down the capitol. Plutarch, a supporter of her revolution, says “While you live, the revolution lives”, showing her responsibility and leadership of her rebellion.
In addition, Katniss is very intelligent. Maybe it was not looked at as the smartest move to volunteer for the Hunger Games, but she showed that she knew what she was doing when she did. She figured out all the complex maps and challenges that the Hunger Games threw at her, and she got by with flying colours. She managed to even out-smart the capitol, and get her and her lover, Peeta, out of the Hunger Games alive. She did this with only poison berries. She describes the Capitol by saying “It must be very fragile, if a handful of berries can bring it down”
To conclude, Katniss is the best because she is so brave, intelligent, and responsible. These are the traits that got her through the Hunger Games, and are bringing her through everyday life obstacles. She is never brought down, and for that is known as “The Girl on Fire”
